This unspoiled island nature reserve and bird sanctuary, is just five kilometres from the mainland and has been a protected environment since 1897, ensuring this untouched island remains a bird-watching paradise of the highest order. There are no introduced predators or pests. The island is much as it was over a century ago. View rare Saddlebacks, Stitch birds, Red Crowned Parakeets plus a host of others. En-route to the island you will pass through the Kapiti Marine Reserve, where you may see passing whales, dolphins and a variety of gulls, gannets, penguins, terns and shearwaters. Only 50 visitor permits a day are issued. Stay overnight for your opportunity to see the very rare Little Spotted Kiwi in it’s natural environment. Famous past visitors include Sir David Attenborough – say no more! This fully guided tour is a must not only for bird lovers, but also for naturalists of all persuasions.
