In 1886, the Waimangu Volcanic Valley was created when Mount Tarawera erupted, destroying the surrounding area. Today, you can choose from a cruise and a range of eco-focused walks and hikes through this unique hydro thermal system that has many features of world significance. Walks range from 45 minutes to over 4 hours. Enjoy a scenic boat cruise on the private Lake Rotomahana. Half day and full day tours including transportation from the Rotorua township are also available. Waimangu is a multiple New Zealand Eco-tourism Award winner, and can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages and physical abilities. Open daily.

Walking/Hiking Options:

Waimangu Highlights: 800m easy downhill walk. Suitable for all levels of fitness. Required time approx. 45 minutes

Easy Walking: 1.5km, 3.2km, 4km easy walks. Suitable for most levels of fitness. Required time approx. 1 to 2.5 hours

Advanced Hiking: 4km up to 8km hiking. Good fitness required. Required time approx. 2 to 3.5 hours

Lake Rotomahana Cruise:

Lake Rotomahana covers 15 craters formed on June 10 1886 during the Tarawera Eruption. Enjoy our boat cruise which has very low environmental impact on this beautiful and very special lake. Learn about the impact of the Mt Tarawera eruption on the local area. View unique scenery that can only be seen from our boat - including volcanic craters, steaming cliffs, fumaroles, lake-edge geysers, abundant birdlife, and unusual thermal plants. Six cruise departures daily. Total time required - 1.5 hours (including the 45 minute cruise & return shuttle from the Waimangu Entrance). The cruise can be enjoyed either on its own, or together with the valley walk/hike.

Waimangu Wanderer:

Waimangu Wanderer is a fully guided half day eco tour that includes return transfers from Rotorua township, walking/hiking in the Waimangu Volcanic Valley, morning tea/coffee, and lunch. Choose from our range of eco-focused walks and hikes ranging from 1.5 - 4km. Daily departures from Rotorua at 8:30am. Bookings essential.

Waimangu Experience:

Waimangu Experience is a fully guided half day eco tour that includes return transfers from Rotorua township, walking/hiking in the Waimangu Volcanic Valley; a cruise on Lake Rotomahana; morning tea/coffee; and lunch. Choose from our range of eco-focused walks and hikes. Daily departures from Rotorua at 8:30am. Bookings essential.

Waimangu Round Trip:

Waimangu Round Trip is a full day guided tour featuring the best of Rotorua's history, geothermal sites, lakes & mountains, and nature experiences. Enjoy a variety of walks, cruises, and attractions.
